Replacement of the workplace computer |
To ensure the switch from your old notebook or desktop PC goes as smoothly as possible, please do the following preparatory work on your old device.
Hinweis |
---|
Please make preparations on time so your data is available on the new computer, as synchronization via OneDrive and Edge is currently a relatively convenient option. |
Backing up locally saved data
If you save files on your work computer, use the Desktop and Documents locations (folders). Both storage locations are usually synchronized with your personal storage space in OneDrive (further information: https://wuvienna.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KBITS/pages/2877228014/OneDrive+synchronisieren#EN).
Data stored in OneDrive is automatically transferred to your new device when you use it.
You can, therefore, copy files and data in other storage locations on your old computer to one of the Desktop or Documents folders to back them up / make them available on your new device.
Pay particular attention to the contents of the following storage locations in your profile folder, which you can find in Windows File Explorer under C:\Users\
> Your-WU-Username

Individually created storage locations on your workplace computer
You know best how you have used your device and where data may still be located. IT-SERVICES has no knowledge of your storage preferences.
You can use the OneDrive web access in your browser to check which data is already available on OneDrive.
The https://wuvienna.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/KBITS/pages/2877784292/OneDrive+-+Best+Practices#EN contain supporting information.
Summary
You can use OneDrive to transfer data from your old computer to your new computer.
To do this, move files you still need from other folders to either Desktop or Documents. These locations (folders) are automatically synchronized with OneDrive.
Important: Make sure your files have been fully uploaded to OneDrive (recommended: green tick - see status icons in Explorer) before switching off and returning your old device.
Backing up bookmarks from browsers
Microsoft Edge saves set bookmarks in your personal Microsoft profile of the WU account. We therefore recommend that you also import bookmarks from Firefox into Edge. This allows you to switch to your new workstation computer easily.
Microsoft Edge is recommended as the default browser at WU because it allows you to take full advantage of Microsoft 365 online applications.
Step 1
Log into the Edge browser with your WU account.
Open edge://settings/profiles
in Microsoft Edge and logging in with your WU account (vorname.nachname@wu.ac.at).
Step 2
If necessary, activate the Synchronize function if the text No synchronization is displayed next to your profile picture.
Step 3
Import the user data* (=bookmarks) from Firefox into Microsoft Edge.
To access the function, enter the following address in the Edge address bar: edge://settings/profiles/importBrowsingData
*) Name from Edge (> Settings > Profiles > Import user data)
Alternatively, save your bookmarks from Firefox in a bookmark file and save them on OneDrive. You can then import the bookmarks into Firefox on your new work computer.
